Podcasting with the iPhone: It just works (barely)
by Podcaster (Video 00:02:14)
Learn how to use a Mac and an iPhone to create high quality podcasts. It's a great device for the task, capable of capturing dialogue from a room full of participants... but, you'll need to go commandline with the root password to synch your files. Get the complete walkthrough here.

Follow the white brick road

Pre-requisites: an OSX machine, an iPhone, and the desire to podcast!

1. Getting out of jail with Installer.app

Download the installer from http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ and run it. Be sure to shut down iTunes before doing the installation.

2. Grab the VNotes package

3. Record your podcast

With the post production process outlined below, you can record a group of a half dozen around a conference table. Just face the iphone up on your table, press record in the Vnotes app, and start chatting.

4. Command line synch

Install the BSD subsystem and SSH packages. Then, you'll need to SFTP to root@ip.address.of.iphone with the default root password, "dottie".

The recording are located at /var/root/Library/Recordings.

Execute get from the command line to copy to your computer.

5. Convert & Levelator

The iPhone records using adaptive multi-rate (AMR), more info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adaptive_Multi-Rate.

Use Levelator to normalize volume across participants who may not be the same distance from the iPhone.

6. MP3-icize, Tag, & Publish

  1. Convert to MP3. I use Audacity. Be sure to download the separate LAME component to be able to encode MP3s. Audacity is free, cross platform, and open source.
  2. Adding ID3 Tags: http://peippo.eu/musorg/ offers a free ID3 editor.
  3. Publish: FreeIQ would love to have your content, but tune into Paul Colligan for how to get it into the Itunes Podcast directory, http://freeiq.com/howtosubmityourpodcasttoitunes
